At a White House press briefing, JD Vance claimed that the ICE agent who shot and killed Renee Nicole Good is “protected by absolute immunity” because he was acting as a federal law enforcement official carrying out his duties. He said: “You have a federal law enforcement official engaging in federal law enforcement action — that’s a federal issue. He is protected by absolute immunity. He was doing his job.” First of all, what he is describing sounds more like qualified immunity ( I know this from all the years I spent watching L.A. Law ), and JD Vance has a law degree from Yale , so he has necessarily been exposed to the concept and should therefore know this to be false . He framed his statement to mean that a state prosecution attempting to hold the agent accountable under Minnesota law would be inappropriate. It is deeply ironic, and more than a little infuriating, that Marjorie Taylor Greene is now poised to ride out of town on a moral high horse for her sudden concern about the victims named in the Epstein files. This is the same Marjorie Taylor Greene who entered Congress as an unapologetic QAnon devotee, peddling fever-dream fantasies about “Pizzagate,” secret tunnels, and Democrats supposedly running child sex rings out of government basements. The same Greene who, at every opportunity, brandished nude photos of Hunter Biden during congressional hearings, turning oversight into voyeurism and cruelty. At Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest, Vice President J.D. Vance delivered a familiar culture-war performance. He mocked Black Democratic politicians, declared that white Americans shouldn’t have to “apologize,” framed the United States as inherently a Christian nation, refused to explicitly condemn bigotry or extremism under the guise of opposing ideological “purity tests,” and dismissed DEI as obsolete. Not a War Crime — Something Far Worse

On September 2, 2025, U.S. forces struck a suspected drug-trafficking boat in the Caribbean Sea — a vessel the government claimed was carrying narcotics and tied to “narco-terrorist” operations. The initial strike reportedly killed eleven people. Two survivors clung to the wreckage, but according to Washington Post reporting, Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order to “kill everybody” aboard the vessel. A second strike was launched, this time aimed directly at the debris and the survivors. Both men were killed. For the first time in a long time, the press corps is acting like a press corps, and they’ve collectively labeled the incident a war crime. But here’s the thing: It isn’t a war crime. Because we’re not at war. Republicans have tried to revive their old post-9/11 rhetoric — we’re at war with terrorists — only now downgraded to we’re at war with drug smugglers. Cute. Catchy. According to him, this was to combat trade deficits with nations that were “ripping us off.” But even as he declared  economic war on the entire planet  , he added a  90-day delay  to give countries time to “make deals.” America, he said, was done taking it lying down—this was economic shock and awe. There’s no real need to argue whether this is necessary or even effective, because it’s not a policy; it’s a dog whistle. The sixth order announced— Executive Order 14160: Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship —besides being a misnomer, is the subject of this post. First off starting  (as my grandmother used to say), a constitutional amendment cannot be repealed or rewritten by executive order. Only a new constitutional amendment—requiring two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states—can change an existing amendment. It has come to public attention that ICE agents are now wearing masks to conceal their identities during enforcement operations. According to ICE and DHS officials, this practice protects agents from retaliation. They cite threats of doxxing, harassment, and even physical targeting of agents and their families following immigration raids. ICE Director Todd Lyons defends the policy, claiming it shields agents from harassment and violence. But there’s a serious problem with this logic.  As the U.S. Senate debates Donald Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill,” Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has stepped forward to voice serious concerns. Tillis delivered a sharp, substantive critique—one of the most forceful GOP floor rebukes in recent memory. He focused on real consequences for North Carolina, highlighted broken promises, and warned of fallout—all while avoiding a direct clash with Trump.
